Randy Travis In 'Critical' Condition After Stroke And Surgery - Health ...

The publicist of Grammy award-winning country star Randy Travis has confirmed that he is in critical condition after suffering a stroke and undergoing brain surgery.
54-year-old Travis has been hospitalised in a Texas hospital since Sunday after his family became extremely concerned with his rapidly deteriorating health.

His doctors confirmed that he was Travis was suffering from cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure when he was admitted.

"Mr. Randy Travis is out of surgery and in critical condition," the hospital website announced last night.

"As a complication of his congestive heart failure Mr Randy Travis has suffered a stroke and is currently undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He is in critical condition," his publicist Kirk Webster said.

Webster also said that his condition is a result of a "recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy."
His family are said to be ?frantic? with worry and Dr. Michael Mack from the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas told ABC News that his family and friends are grateful for all the support they have received from well-wishers.

?On behalf of his Mr. Travis? family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received,? he said.

The news comes after it was reported yesterday that he was responding to treatment for his condition.

Travis is known for his hits Ever Amen and Three Wooden Crosses but in 2012 he hit the headlines for walking into a store completely naked and trying to buy cigarettes before crashing his car. He was fined and received probation for the arrest.

No surprises when it comes to No. 1 sports city in the SEC

ESPN MediaZone

Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, ranked as the top SEC city for sports fans.

As summer reaches its height, many are anxiously awaiting the beginning of fall and kickoff of the 2013 college football season. All eyes will be on the Birmingham-based Southeastern Conference to see if it can retain possession of the BCS trophy for an eighth-straight season.

The attention the SEC has generated has even reached as far as the real estate business on the west coast.

California-based Movoto Real Estate ranked all 14 college towns in the Southeastern Conference to determine which city was the best for sports fans.

And it's no surprise which city earned number one: Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama.

The rankings were based on best tailgating experience, sports bars, attendance, rival wins and championships.

With the quad, the strip, a stadium filled with more than 100,000 fans and two consecutive national championships, Tuscaloosa proves to be the most popular college town in the SEC.

Sun's cosmic ray shadow is solar storm predictor

We are used to the sun creating shadows when it hits other objects, but it casts its own when viewed through a cosmic ray detector. Now it seems monitoring this shadow could help us to prepare for solar bursts.

Cosmic rays are high-energy, charged particles that constantly stream through the solar system, but are blocked in part by the magnetic field of the sun's corona. The result is a patch that is low in cosmic rays ? a shadow ? that appears on any cosmic ray detector on Earth.

Michihiro Amenomori of Hirosaki University in Japan and colleagues wondered if the shadow might vary with the solar cycle. They used a cosmic ray detector in Tibet to track changes in the sun's shadow between 1996 and 2009, slightly longer than the sun's full 11-year cycle of activity.

The shadow's intensity varied with the solar cycle, and was most pronounced during the solar minimum, when the sun is at its least energetic. The team conclude that when the sun peaks, the coronal magnetic field is more active too and starts deflecting cosmic rays towards Earth, rather than just blocking them.

Space weather forecast

With the help of the shadow, other variations in the coronal magnetic field might be detectable, such as those that cause coronal mass ejectionsMovie Camera.

These outbursts can fry satellites, and electronics on Earth, but are tough to predict using the light emitted by the corona ? although astronomers can track the sun's surface magnetic field this way. "As the coronal magnetic field observed optically is weak compared with that from the solar surface, one needs to go close to the sun," says team member Masato Takita of the University of Tokyo, Japan. "However, a spacecraft would be burned out before approaching the coronal region."

A detailed understanding of the coronal magnetic field could provide an early warning system for Earth and orbiting spacecraft, says Mathew Owens at the University of Reading, UK, who was not involved in the research. "You can potentially get three or four days' warning," he says, though he adds the information from the sun's shadow is not yet complete enough for space weather predictions.

New Microsoft ad takes another swing at the iPad

New Microsoft ad takes another swing at the iPad

Microsoft today unveiled a new commercial which, yet again, takes some shots against Apple's iPad.

In the advertisement below, a Windows 8 device is shown against Apple's iPad which is depicted as a stunted device to the extent that it's not capable of full multitasking.

Something tells me that the commercial above would elicit a hearty laugh from real baseball scouts.

It's also rather comical that the person talking to the scout with the iPad seemingly gets flustered when he can only hear audio and not see video, as if that would realistically bring a videoconferencing conversation to a standstill.

Microsoft's latest ad is the latest effort from Redmond to take shots at the iPad, which given its large marketshare, is to be expected. In previous commercials, Microsoft has taken the iPad to task for not being able to run PowerPoint, for not having a zoomable home screen, and for not having SD card support.
